Artist's Comments

and if the City falls but a single man escapes
he will carry the City within himself on the roads of exile
he will be the City

we look in the face of hunger the face of fire face of death
worst of all - the face of betrayal

and only our dreams have not been humiliated

-Zbigniew Herbert, "Report from the Besieged City"

The City is Warsaw; but the City is also all of Poland. The City had fallen long before the Uprising gave its last defense, before the betrayal at Yalta, but every Pole who survived the war was that man who escaped the fall of the City, and in that way, Poland was never truly lost and could be carried along and nurtured, secretly, until its next rebirth.

I love Zbigniew Herbert. He was a great Poet (with capital letter), maybe even the best.

Thank you for this picture.

I don't know about best ever, but...he's very good. And quickly becoming one of my favorites (even if comparing him to any English-language poets I can think of doesn't really work - he's sort of in his own category, so it's hard to say "he's better than so-and-so, but not as good as such-and-such"). It's sometimes hard for me to read his poetry, though; it can kind of make you want to cry. Most of the time. :/

And I'm glad you like the picture. C:

I'm so happy to see your new illustrations *_*
I'm not sure if you saw that but it makes me think about this postaer from WWII: [link]
If you are interested in Warsaw Uprising there is a very good documentary movie by CNN about it:

<3333 There are quite a few more than this, but these are the only ones I wanted to upload at the moment (other than as scraps). I did make an art dump at my journal if you wanted to see the others. C:

As for that poster, I love it. I actually had it saved on my computer. And thank you, I'll go watch that documentary right now. (I got a book about it from the library but it turned out to be just the diary of a young man who was involved in the Uprising, not an academic text, so it didn't give much of a "bigger picture", and it was the only book they had. -_-)

*hugs*

OMG, I love your drawings so much! Really, you are one of most gifted persons that I know and you are improving so fast! I should check my LJ more often D: I even started to write my own entries XD;
I hope that you like this movie, they are talking there about Rising '44 The Battle For Warsaw book by Norman Davies - my older brother told that it's quite good and I think that you can buy it in US. Actually Norman Davies is the only one well-known Western historian who wrote popular books about Polish history.
uhh onca again - I love your artwork, your pics made me really happy now <3

Have I mentioned that I love your work yet?
No?
Well I love it. It's good for the little patriot inside of me haha (not to mention that I like Herbert (: )

I like how simple the picture is. Also, Feliks' face. He doesn't look sad or angry, just calm; perhaps these little repairs are a daily routine now, just another thing to be done...
